Tutukaka’s Destination Shop

They’re out of the way, but worth it. Stores that are destinations in themselves. Eclectic Culture Co and other "destination shops" dot the countryside. They're often better than the equivalent in Auckland or other cities. Their locations, however, are somewhat peculiar, requiring customers to go the extra mile - literally - to visit them.

Pilot whale stranding has measure of success.

A mass stranding of 58 pilot whales, mobilized over 250-300 people, touched the hearts of the nation, and everyone waited with bated breath as the volunteers busted a gut, went without sleep for 40 hours, touched a star or two on the way, and saved nine pilot whales. This is part of their story.

More wildlife species protected.

Whale sharks, katipo spiders and all giant weta will now be absolutely protected under changes to the Wildlife Act, Minister of Conservation Kate Wilkinson announced today.
They are among 12 previously unprotected species of invertebrate and a number of marine species, including manta ray, giant groper and corals, which have had their protection status upgraded from zero to absolute.

This May (the 18th), the Experiencing Marine Reserve (EMR) team headed out on their 9th annual trip to the Poor Knights marine reserve, starting with only three students from three schools in 2002 this year the competition involved 17 schools from Northland and Auckland. The trip was attended by 29 students and 31 parents, guardians and EMR coordinators

Offers of Help for Robbed Tourists

Two German tourists have been shown a nicer side to Whangarei, after their van and belongings were stolen. The Poor Knights Islands certainly were a highlight, and the warmth of the people on the Tutukaka Coast made a difference with the genuine response showing Northland's real manaakitanga (hospitality and respect).

"It's a mix of hospitality and karma. If my daughter was in trouble somewhere I'd like to know someone was looking after her."
