Course Overview & Structure
The IDC is divided into two distinct components, which can be taken together or separately:
- Assistant Instructor (AI) Course: Focuses on foundational teaching theory, academic presentation techniques, and confined water skill demonstrations.
- Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) Program: Refines your in-water skill control, teaching methods, and prepares you for the final evaluation.
Following the successful completion of the IDC, you will attend the PADI Instructor Examination (IE)—an independent, two-day evaluation conducted by a PADI Instructor Examiner.
Course Prerequisites
To enroll in the PADI Instructor Development Course, you must meet the following requirements:
- Certification: PADI Divemaster (or qualifying leadership certification from another training organisation).
- Age: Minimum 18 years old.
- Logged Dives: At least 60 logged dives to begin the course (100 logged dives required before taking the IE).
- Experience: Certified diver for at least 6 months.
- First Aid Training: Emergency First Response (EFR) Primary and Secondary Care training (or equivalent) within the last 24 months.
- Medical Clearance: Signed medical statement by a physician within the last 12 months.
